Return to School September 2020

August 31, 2020

Dear Students and Families:

I hope your summer has been safe and relaxing.  This continues to be an interesting year.

Recently the Manitoba Government released a framework for the return to school and the Rolling River School Division (rrsd.mb.ca) has developed a plan which follows those guidelines.

We have been busy preparing our 2020 – 2021 school year planning to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff.  All our practices and guidelines are directed by Manitoba Public Health, The Department of Education, and the RRSD.

Under the current Return to In-Class Learning scenario, all students in the RRSD will return to school full time on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.  ECI students are to have in-class instruction every school day.

Our plans follow the current public health guidelines and, there is no doubt, students will notice many changes upon their return.

The number one priority for us is the health and safety of our students and staff and the Erickson Collegiate Return to School Plan will reflect that.  We will distribute our school plan by Friday, Sep. 4.

Here are some of the things you can expect to see in the plan:

Students (along with input from their parents) need to self screen each day before coming to school.

All staff and students will be required to wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible.  This is in effect at all times within the school building. Students must wear a mask on the bus. There are additional guidelines regarding masks forthcoming from Manitoba Health and will be shared with all students and families when received.

Handwashing and sanitizing stations will be set up and monitored to ensure students use them.  Personal protective practices (physical distancing, cough into arm, hand hygiene, etc.) will be taught and re-enforced.

We are implementing increased cleaning and sanitizing protocols throughout all areas of the school.

Students will stay in the same classroom and cohort as much as possible.  For example, the Grade 7 and 8’ will be in a cohort that has them remaining in their own room for most of the day.  The Grade 10 and 11 cohorts mainly will be in the northern wing of the school.  Those students will remain in those assigned room with the exception of their optional courses.  The Grade 9 students will be based out of the Learning Centre for the majority of their classes.  When students are required to move to another class (an optional course), there will be staggered dismissal times so that social distancing may be maintained.  Teachers will move around to different classrooms. Each classroom is set up to provide a minimum of 1 m distancing between all students.  In classrooms that are using tables, there are plexiglass dividers for another layer of safety.

Movement breaks and snack breaks will be incorporated into the school day.

Different grades have different entrance/ exit doors to reduce congestion. The Grade 7 and 8 students will enter and exit through the  main doors. The Grade 10 and 11 students will enter and exit through the north doors. The Grade 9 and 12 students will enter and exit through the south doors (gym).  Everyone must sanitize upon entering and before exiting the building. Physical distancing needs to be used at all times.  After students enter into the building, they are to go directly to their first class.

Students and staff must stay home when sick, or when exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.  Parents are responsible to screen the children in their care before sending them to school.  Please do not send a student to school if they are sick.

Protocols will be in place if a student or staff member gets sick while at school (see division plan for more information).

Protocols are in place if a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19.  Public Health will be involved in these situations (see division plan for more information).

The timetable is unchanged. However, there may be changes to some courses. For example, the Foods and Nutrition class will consist of theory/ classroom work only. Physical Education classes will be held outdoors as much as possible. Because our band does not have any woodwind or brass instruments, Grade 9 – 12 Band will be offered.

There will be no canteen this year.  Students must bring their own lunches and they are not to share with other students.

Students will not be using lockers. Students need keep personal belongings with them at all times.

Students should bring a water bottle to school with them. Filling stations will be available at the school.

Extra-curricular activities (sports, intramurals, clubs) are on hold.

When a student has a spare/ work period he or she will be assigned to a specific classroom. Students will still have sign out privileges.

School photos are considered a non-essential service and will be suspended in RRSD until further notice.

Please note that these plans may change as we are directed by Manitoba Health guidelines and the school division.

Due to the suspension of classes and remote learning last year, many of our students were not able to complete their timetable for the 2020 – 2021 year.  Staff will be doing timetables with students on the first morning of return.

Also, if your son or daughter is feeling highly anxious about the return to school next week or you have a child with a major health issue, please contact us this week so that we may be able to address the concerns before the first day of school.

We are looking forward to seeing the students and having a safe return to school.  If you have questions or concerns, please call me at 204 636 2605 (extension 411) or email me at blee@rrsd.mb.ca.

Respectfully,

Barry Lee

Principal
